Key stage 3

In Year 7 all students at The Gryphon School study French. You will learn how to listen, speak, read and write in French. You will also learn about the way of life in France and French-speaking countries. During the year you will cover topics such as greetings, names, age, numbers, alphabet, school, dates, birthdays, telling the time, families and pets, sports and leisure, house and home, holidays.

In addition in Year 7 all students study one lesson of Spanish and one lesson of German per fortnight based on the topics of Berlin and Mexico.

In Year 8 all students continue French and, in addition, you can choose whether to study Spanish or German. You may have the opportunity to visit one of these countries during the year.

The topics covered during this year will be:

French:

Talking about yourself and others, talking about the past and the future, daily routine, going out, family and friends, parts of the body and illness, meal times, arranging visit to Paris, choosing and booking a place to stay.

Spanish:

Greetings, classroom language, name, age, where you live, numbers, nationalities, countries, dates, birthdays, transport, school subjects, likes/dislikes, time, days of the week, describing school, family, describing people, pets, describing where people live, house and home, daily routine, directions, local area, weather.

German:

Greetings, classroom language, favourite things, pets, hobbies, towns, what you can do in town, ordering food and drink, personal identity, where we live, families, at home, daily routine, meals, school.

In Year 9 students will have the opportunity to continue studying the 2 languages they took in Year 8 or they can choose to study only one.

The topics covered during this year will be:

French:

People and places – now and in the past; healthy living – diet and keeping fit; fashion; music; young people’s views and concerns about the wider world, media, leisure, future plans and travel.

German:

The weather; what you did yesterday; recent holidays; travelling on trains; illnesses; at the Doctors; food and shopping; directions; staying with a guest family; invitations; television programmes.

Spanish:

Free time; sport; helping at home; food and drink; ordering food in a restaurant; more numbers; mealtimes; clothes; school uniform; shopping for clothes/sizes; saying what you are going to do; supermarket (quantities, prices); buying presents; staying with a family; tourism; holidays (both past and future).
