The Gryphon Sixth Form is a large and vibrant community of more than 440 students, over 40% of whom join us from neighbouring state and independent schools. We offer our students high academic standards within a very caring and supportive school community. Resources and facilities are outstanding and are continually updated to meet student needs. We are delighted that our Sixth Form has been judged as outstanding in our 2014 OFSTED inspection.

‘’Tutors monitor students closely and effective extra help is given to those who need it. Almost all students complete their courses successfully and the large majority go on to university. Others go on to training courses or directly into employment.’’ Ofsted 2014

Students can select from a comprehensive Level 3 programme including 6 BTEC courses and over 30 Advanced level courses including new subjects such as Photography, Psychology, Classics and Law. Students interested in applying for Oxbridge or Medical School have an individualised programme to support them in these competitive areas.

Whilst the Sixth Form brings new found freedoms (such as no uniform and study periods on the timetable) and increased responsibility, it is also a demanding two years in which students must decide upon the direction of their immediate and long term futures. To help them, all students have a tutor to offer guidance and support through their A level or BTEC studies, with additional help from the Sixth Form leadership team and our Head of Careers. A large part of our pastoral programme is devoted to supporting students with their post-18 aspirations including university choices, which remains our most popular route, as well as on life skills to prepare students for their future beyond compulsory education. When they leave us, our students move on to an impressive range of degree courses and careers.

Our results are impressive; our 2016 A Level results were among the best in the South West for non-selective schools. Over 80% of grades awarded at A Level were A* to C, with 30% of these being at A/A* (well above national averages in both instances). Accordingly, our students have very high aspirations, with 96% securing a place at the university of their choice. In 2016, over 40% of students secured places at prestigious Russell Group universities, including 3 to Oxford and Cambridge and 2 in university Schools of Medicine.

‘’Levels of attainment are above national averages in most advanced level subjects. Achievement in vocational courses is consistently strong.’’ Ofsted 2014

In the Sixth Form, as in the lower school, we are keen to develop the ‘whole person’ and accordingly we offer an impressive range of extra–curricula opportunities including both national and international visits. A quarter of the year group are elected as School Prefects, and all students participate in some way as leaders and role models, as tutor group representatives or as organisers or members of clubs and societies. By encouraging all students to get involved in opportunities outside the curriculum we develop their confidence and creativity, and encourage them to find a positive sense of achievement and fulfillment.

If you would like to be considered for a place in our Sixth Form please complete the electronic application form in our Sixth Form application programme. All applicants will be interviewed to discuss the suitability of their choice of course and future aspirations with a senior member of staff.
