Careers

Students can book an individual careers guidance interview with, Mr Martin, the Careers, Advice & Guidance Manager by visiting the Careers Centre in the LRC or following the ‘Careers’ link on the Student Intranet. Parents can also book an careers appointment for their child via the Parents page on the intranet. Mr Martin is also happy to speak with parents either face to face or by email/telephone to discuss options and career choices

Mr Martin offers expert, impartial guidance on the following topics:
• Career Planning
• UCAS advice
• Apprenticeships and Employment with Training
• Work Shadowing
• A Level choice
• Degree choice
• Degree study in Europe and beyond
• Personal statements
• Student finance
• CVs, applications, cover letters and interview skills
• Interest guides
• School leaver opportunities – apprenticeships, jobs & training schemes
Students also receive careers input via Citizenship in Year 9 and PSHE in Years 8, 10 and 11. Year 12 and 13 receive targeted support and are encouraged to discuss their career plans with Mr Martin in a flexible and appropriate manner.
Every Monday an updated list of current vacancies are posted on the Student Intranet showing local and regional apprenticeships at Intermediate, Advanced, Higher and Degree level.

Bournemouth University Visit – An introduction to University from BU Aim Higher

Year 10
Work experience for vocational students.
Careers College – A chance to ‘try out’ a range of careers at Weymouth College and Kingston Maurward College.

Careers Cafes – Regular talks from leading professionals including an Architect, Barrister, Psychologist, Veterinary Surgeon, Journalist and Photographer.
South Somerset Careers Convention at Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton
Talks from local employers eg AgustaWestlands, Royal Navy.
CV Writing


Year 12
UCAS Convention visit, UWE, Bristol for all Yr12 (transport provided)
Oxbridge Conference for early deadline students (transport provided)

Progression Day exploring all post 18 options

Year 13
PSHE – Non-UCAS
• Support and presentations on CVs, Letters and Application formats
A Level results and clearing service

Post 6th Form/Year 11
Ex-Gryphon students can access support from the Careers Centre in the year after they have left, e.g. Gap Year students, those wishing to change their Uni course, look for apprenticeships or recovering from illness.
