Media Studies


Reason for studying this subject

Media Studies GCSE is open to all students but it will be of particular
interest to those who enjoy film, television, newspapers, magazines,
e-media and journalism. The course is designed to help you to
understand how these media products are constructed, how we use
and understand them and the effects they can have upon our world.

What you will be studying

During the course you will have the opportunity to study at least three different types of media. Your assignments will contain some theory but also some practical work and you will be encouraged to work both alone and within a group. You could be asked to analyse a series of websites before designing your own website.

You may be asked to examine different types of television programmes or films before thinking up an idea for a new television programme. You could even be asked to design an advertising campaign for a film having looked at other campaigns for current films. You will also have the chance to produce your own media project such as a magazine.

How you will be assessed

The course is assessed through three pieces of coursework (60%) and an examination (40%).

Is it for me?

It is important to be keen, organised and determined if you choose to
opt for Media Studies. You should enjoy using the media and try to
keep up to date with what is happening in the media. If you think you
have these qualities then you should find this course enjoyable and

  • Level 2 only
  • Equivalent to 1 GCSE A* – G Grade
  • QCA Score A*= 58, C = 40, G = 16
