Focus On: Drama
We are introducing ‘Focus Fridays’ which will give people an insight into our departments here at The Gryphon. Kicking it off, we have our wonderful Drama team! Here’s what their students have been up to this week….
This week in the Drama Department we have held our Year 11 Component 2 practical exams worth 20% of the GCSE. The requirement is for students to either act or design two extracts from a chosen play. Our students performed a variety of plays ranging from some naturalistic traditional scripts to more extreme styles such as Steven Berkoff’s Physical texts. All the students involved rehearsed throughout the day and then performed to an external examiner in the evening. All performances were of an extremely high standard and students should be exceptionally proud of themselves!
Other year groups have been extremely busy too. Year 7 have continued to develop their understanding of a range of ‘Theatre Genres’ creating some interesting ‘Physical Theatre’ pieces. Year 8 have continued to practically explore their script titled ‘Sparkleshark’ analysing the language used as well as characters present. Year 9 have been gaining an understanding of the GCSE course, and experimenting with a range of dramatic techniques to enhance their performance skills. A Level students have been challenging themselves with their written exam preparations, as well as watching and evaluating professional live theatre performances.
The next few weeks are an exciting time for the department as we will be launching our ‘Live Theatre Evenings’ where students will have the option to come along and watch a variety of professional theatre shows (often performed at the National Theatre) for free! This is an amazing opportunity for all students to be able to access and be inspired by professional theatre to help with her own progress.
