Focus On: Maths

This week in the Mathematics department we have held the Primary Chess Tournament. Mr Unwin has been leading the way with his Year 7 helpers from Chess Club. We have welcomed 9 Primary schools from the local area with a total of 34 students. The day itself is a battle of the best, where there is a winning individual student from the day and a winning team/school.

This year’s winners were:

Top 3 schools:

1st – Bradford Abbas
2nd – Milborne Port
3rd – Charlton Horethorne

Top 3 individuals:

1st: – John J
2nd – Bella M
3rd – Robin L

Thank you also to our Year 7 helpers: Maya, Lilly-Mae, Isabel, Laura and Eleanor.

In other news, a selection of Gryphon students in Year 9, 10 and 11 have just competed in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a great opportunity for our students to challenge their Maths ability and understanding outside of the classroom. Students are competing for Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. We are again awaiting these results with great anticipation. Another huge thank you for Mr Unwin and Miss Fraser for leading these events for the students.

We also run an Origami club which is a relaxing 40 minute session every Monday lunchtime in Ma10 with Miss Fraser and Mrs K. This year, the group origami-bombed a display in the Maths foyer, creating hundreds of origami butterflies to brighten up the wall. They have also had origami frog races, made origami love-hearts and many more animals and objects! KS3 are particularly keen on their origami but anybody is welcome to attend!
