At The Gryphon School, spirituality is understood as the development of the whole person: enabling every student to grow in self‑understanding, moral character, compassion, curiosity and a deep sense of belonging. Rooted in our Christian vision of living life in all its fullness (John 10:10), spirituality at Gryphon is not confined to one subject or moment, instead, it is woven through the curriculum, relationships, enrichment opportunities and the everyday life of the school.
Spiritual development is framed through four interconnected strands:
Leadership: Self
Integrity: Others
Fellowship: World
Exploration: Beyond
Together, these strands support students to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, and to grow into thoughtful, responsible and compassionate young people.
Across The Gryphon School, students are consistently supported to develop a strong sense of self, confidence and inner resilience. Leadership of self is fostered through high‑quality teaching, reflective practice and purposeful challenge. In lessons across all subjects, students are encouraged to persevere, learn from mistakes and reflect thoughtfully on their progress, for example through structured assessment reflection, evaluative coursework processes and the setting of personal targets.
Beyond the classroom, Gryphon provides a wide range of enrichment opportunities that intentionally develop confidence and inner strength. Activities such as Duke of Edinburgh, Ten Tors, Adventure Training, school productions, music ensembles, sport, clubs and competitions encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, building courage, resilience and self‑belief. Pastoral provision – including PSHE, tutor time, Nurture support, the Haven, ELSA and counselling – ensures students are supported to understand themselves, manage emotions and develop confidence, particularly at key transition points or moments of challenge.
Through these experiences, students are encouraged to recognise their own worth, potential and capacity to grow, helping them to live life with purpose and fullness.
Integrity is a defining feature of life at The Gryphon School. Students are encouraged to act with kindness, fairness and honesty, and to show respect for the dignity of every individual. Classroom environments are inclusive and collaborative, with an emphasis on respectful discussion, listening carefully to others and supporting one another’s learning.
Across the curriculum, students encounter opportunities to explore moral choice, responsibility and ethical decision‑making. Subjects such as English, History, Geography, Science, Social Sciences, Business and Computing engage students with themes including justice, inequality, environmental responsibility, ethical leadership and the impact of technology. PSHE and RE provide structured opportunities for reflection on relationships, equality, consent, prejudice and personal responsibility.
Outside lessons, restorative approaches, peer mentoring, equality initiatives and pastoral care further reinforce the importance of integrity in everyday interactions. Through these experiences, students learn that living life fully involves acting with compassion and responsibility toward others.
At Gryphon, students are encouraged to understand themselves as part of a wider community; within the school, the local area and the global world. A strong sense of belonging is fostered through inclusive tutor groups, student leadership roles, equality councils, chaplaincy links and opportunities for student voice. Whole‑school events such as Diversity Days, performances, charity fundraising, sporting fixtures and community projects reinforce shared identity and collective responsibility.
The curriculum plays a central role in developing students’ understanding of the wider world. Subjects across the school explore cultures, beliefs, environments and societies beyond students’ own experiences. Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences develop awareness of global inequality, migration, cultural identity and sustainability, while Science and Business highlight global challenges such as climate change, pandemics and economic interdependence. Educational visits, fieldwork and enrichment activities deepen this understanding and make learning tangible and relevant.
Through these opportunities, students are helped to see themselves as connected to others and equipped to contribute positively to a shared future.
Exploring meaning, purpose and life’s big questions is central to spirituality at The Gryphon School. Students are regularly given time and space to ask questions without simple answers and to engage with complexity, mystery and depth. Subjects such as Religious Education, English, Science, Social Sciences, Creative Arts, Film and Music intentionally create moments of awe and wonder – whether through the study of the universe, the intricacy of life, powerful human stories, artistic expression or shared performance.
Opportunities for reflection are built into daily school life through lessons, tutor time, PSHE, assemblies and Acts of Worship. Students are encouraged to reflect on what matters to them, the kind of people they hope to become and how their values shape choices and actions. For students facing particular challenges, spaces such as the Haven and access to counselling provide safe and compassionate environments for deeper reflection and support.
This strand invites students to look beyond themselves and the immediate, nurturing curiosity, wonder and thoughtful engagement with life’s deeper questions.
