Gryphon School excels in Ofsted report

The Gryphon School has been praised by Ofsted for our curriculum, high expectations and extra-curricular opportunities in our latest inspection report. We have retained our ‘Good’ rating following the inspection at the end of the summer term.

Ofsted highlighted our “broad and ambitious” curriculum, saying “teaching supports pupils to gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the future” and that “leaders have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and achievement”.

But it is not only in the academic sphere that we excel. Ofsted also said “Pupils champion issues that are important to them, such as the environment and sustainability. They welcome the school’s work to celebrate diversity, such as women in science and neurodiversity. Pupils say they are encouraged to take positions of responsibility. They relish these opportunities to lead their peers”.

“Pupils take part in many opportunities to nurture their talents, interests and abilities” living up to the school’s vision of ‘Living life in all its fullness’. Students spoke excitedly to inspectors about their participation in musical performances and sporting competitions. Also mentioned was that “pupils develop their character and resilience through taking part in outdoor activities” such as our leading Duke of Edinburgh and Ten Tors schemes.

Acting Headteacher Jim Gower said “I am absolutely delighted with this report, which I feel is a fair and accurate reflection of our school. The Gryphon School’s ethos lies in the words of Jesus found in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. At The Gryphon we strive to be a 10:10 school, where every member of our school community is able to experience living life in all of its fullness. We want our students to flourish in their educational setting, in life outside of school and beyond. I am thrilled that this report recognises our ethos in action and has identified both the academic achievements and personal development opportunities that our school offers our students. I am so appreciative of our students, who always represent our school with such great pride; and, I am so grateful to our wonderfully dedicated and committed teaching and support staff, who consistently go above and beyond to create a school environment that allows every member of our community to thrive”.

The Gryphon School is a founding member of SAST (Sherborne Area Schools’ Trust). Steve Smith, SAST Education Director said “Congratulations to The Gryphon team, on the outcome of their inspection. The report illustrates how hard they work to support the students, helping them to realise their potential and prepare them for their next steps.”
