Our vision is that every child reaches their potential regardless of background or educational need. We do this by having a brilliant team including specialist teachers for literacy and dyslexia, highly trained support staff, a Speech and Language Therapist and ELSA workers. We all work together to support the young people at the Gryphon to achieve their goals and leave us prepared for adult life.
We are a large, mixed comprehensive in North Dorset. We have around 135 students on the SEND register, of which approximately 35 have EHCPs
Last year the Learning Support department ran over 5000 hours of intervention, including small group spelling, 1:1 literacy and numeracy, counselling and self-esteem groups.
In our year 7 parents evening parents reported that our school had been ‘a revelation’ and that ‘nothing could be better for their child.
For students with more complex needs we offer Nurture provision. The mission of Nurture is to raise academic standards, with particular emphasis on literacy, whilst providing children with a nurturing environment in which they feel safe, secure and supported. These are small classes with specialist teachers, and OfSted reported that ‘There is a strong focus on improving literacy and key skills so that students can play a full part in all their lessons. This is proving very successful. Pupils make rapid progress, and the groups are popular with pupils and parents.’
Quality first teaching in classrooms is an essential part of meeting all students needs, including those with SEN. For students who need further support we have an excellent team of Learning Mentors and a range of interventions including:
-1:1 Literacy and Numeracy
-Social Skills groups
-1:1 ELSA/ Counselling
-Speech and Language assessments and support
-Strength and Shine
-Access to the Blue Room
As part of our vision we want to ensure that our students have the skills and qualifications needed for their next steps, whatever they may be. For some this is remaining in our 6th form or going to a local college. For others it is an apprenticeship in the workplace. We work hard to ensure that students are supported in making decisions about their futures.
